Thanksgiving Cornucopia

Craft Beer Blast

November, 2013

From Larry...

November is the month you can still get most of the fall beers, and the winter styles are coming in. Here in South Florida we get a head start on the 'festival season' with several different festivals planned for November. The temperatures are dropping; it will be great to get outside, enjoy a cool breeze and a good seasonal brew. Ribfest is at the zoo this weekend. See below for more details. On November 16th, the 6th annual Treasure Coast Beer Fest will be at the Civic Center in Port St Lucie. On November 23rd, FIU will have their second annual BrewFest at the Biscayne campus. This is a small festival and features local breweries and homebrewers. More details in the article below.

Locally, Wynwood Brewing has officially opened; I visited on the first night and enjoyed the new brewery and brews. Production has ramped up so their beer is now appearing at local watering holes. See photos from that night on the GBL FB page

Ribfest is at Zoo Miami this weekend November 1-3, 2013. Ribfest is a three-day outdoor grilling extravaganza where national ribbers compete for trophies and bragging rights. Ribfest not only features great food, but live entertainment, arts and crafts and a host of family-friendly activities. Ribfest offers attendees the option of bundling Zoo Miami and Ribfest entertainment for one great price! Come out Saturday and get a bit of beer history along with sampling of some of the brews in the VIP area. I will be giving the talk on beer at 2:30...see you there.

The "Style of the Month" for November is Bière de Garde, a style brewed in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. These beers were originally brewed and stored for future use, similar to a Belgian Saison. Pairs with many different foods; it's the perfect Thanksgiving beer.

The Brewery of the Month for November is Woodstock Inn Brewery of North Woodstock, NH. Woodstock has been brewing for over 14 years as a part of the Woodstock Inn Station and Brewery. Recent expansion to a full production brewery has made the beer available throughout New England. On my recent trip to the area, I spent two nights at the Woodstock Inn.

Since I can't get to every brewery or brewpub in the country, occasionally a Guest Reviewer will review a brewery I haven't visited. Recently, Jeff Pearl visited Stoudts brewery and shared some pictures and thoughts on the GBL 2013 review page. It looks like a pretty cool place.

Biere de Garde Glass

           Style of the Month

          Bière de Garde

A French style, Bière de Garde ("Beer for Keeping") is brewed in the areas of France near the Belgian boarder. It was originally brewed by farmers at the end of winter, and meant to last through the summer months until the weather was cool enough to brew again. Many bières de garde are bottled in champagne bottles complete with the cork and wire cage regalia. The champagne region is only 50 miles away and commercial brewers have always used wine bottles. American brewers have taken to the style and a wide variety of bières de garde are now available at bottle shops everywhere. Bière de garde is characterized by a toasty malt flavor and unique earthy and herbal flavors. Bière de garde is the Thanksgiving beer; the stuffing and gravy have strong herbal flavors to match the beer's herbal flavors. If the turkey is dry, this beer makes everything taste juicy. The biscuity malt flavors match the lightly nutty flavor of the meat and the carbonation cleanses your palette, so you don't realize you ate so much. ABV 6 -8%

On Saturday November 23rd from 12 - 5, the second annual BrewFest will be held at the FIU Biscayne campus. Last year's event was small and participants could meet brewers, owners and students involved with the FIU brewing program. This year will be similar; the number of tickets will be limited so the same atmosphere will prevail. The event is small enough that you can talk to brewers and anyone else involved and not be pushed for time by 100's of people standing in line behind you. It's a beautiful venue and the weather should be perfect. From the event website  "Come face-to-face with renowned brewers as they share their knowledge and passion for beer and beer making. The outdoor event exclusively features the breweries, brewpubs, and home brewers who are emerging in our local beer market. Several educational seminars will be held throughout the day and are included with entry. Food will be available for purchase." Get your tickets by November 17th at a discounted price. For tickets go HERE. For updated information see the event FB page.

    Woodstock Inn and Brewery

On Christmas day 1982, an over 100 year deserted home on Main Street North Woodstock, NH became the Woodstock Inn. Two years later the inn expanded by moving the old train station in nearby Lincoln to the inn property. It became the the Woodstock Station housing an enlarged kitchen, more dining space and later home to the original brewery. There have been several expansions over the years so there are now six different buildings, 2 breweries and 3 pubs! No one should have to ask why I would spend two days last September at this very cool place. I first discovered it in 2003 when the original 7 barrel brewery had been open for 8 years. They had 12 or more beers on tap then. The inn has a policy that any returning guests get a free growler of house beer upon check - in. I was finally able to do just that on my recent visit. The place has really grown since my first visit; there is now a 30 barrel full production brewery at the end of the original station. When it is operating the work can be viewed form the station pub / bar and tours are available daily. The beer selection still is huge; old favorites and some of the newer styles that are popular now. The new brewery expansion has allowed for bottling and distribution throughout New England. They are brewing some good brews and there is something for everyone. For more about the inn see the Woodstock Inn website. The brewery now has it's own website.

Locally...
The 2X Ultra Double IPA is on. Coming soon: Tripel Reserve and Honey Amber ale. LaRubia from Wynwood Brewing is now on along with several different guest beers. Saturday November 2nd come in to watch UM vs FSU the current "Game of the Year". Happy hour pricing and specials throughout the game.

Ribfest is this weekend Nov 1 - 3 at Zoo Miami. This three day festival has a national 'ribbers' competition for prizes for "Best" Ribs, Beef Brisket, Pork, Chicken and Sauce. In the VIP area I will be giving a presentation on beer history.

South Florida Brewers Guild Festival 2013 is Saturday November 2 at Intracoastal Park in Boynton Beach. Sample Florida's best handcrafted beers from over 30 breweries. Food trucks and entertainment will all be there and beer lovers will be able sample all Florida brews from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
New Breweries

Wynwood Brewery: There have been 'soft opening' nights most of October. Now that the tap room is open see the events page for upcoming events at the tap room and around town.

MIA Brewing Co.The Groundbreaking event went well complete with sledge hammers to start knocking down walls. See photos on my FB page.Construction continues and they hope to open early 2014.Check MIA's Facebook page to follow progress on the brewery and see where they will be pouring their beer and giving out MIA bottle openers.

Florida Brewery Corner
Pinglehead Brewing Company of Orange Park, FL brews "Beer with Attitude". I found this out on my first visit earlier this year. They brew big beers. Big on hops, bitterness and taste. I like this attitude and wish a few more Florida brewers would get it! Upon my entry, I was greeted with a friendly "Welcome to Brewers Pizza" and I replied that I liked the  Pinglehead Red. By the time I got to my seat at the bar my Red was there. Brewers Pizza is next door to the brewery and has all their beers and many great national beers as well. It's a great pizza place too. Green Flash Green Bullet Triple IPA was also enjoyed. If in the area this is a must stop.
